Privacy policy

The Chief Executive of Skills Funding (the Chief Executive) operates the National Careers Service which is the publicly funded careers service for adults and young people (aged 13 or over) in England. The service includes the website, services delivered from the website, the National Contact Centre and Careers Advisory Services.

The Data Controller for the purpose of the applicable data protection legislation is the Chief Executive of Skills Funding. Further details about the legal status of the Chief Executive and his registration as Data Controller can be found on the Skills Funding Agency Website.

The Chief Executive is committed to protecting and respecting your privacy. This Policy sets out how we both use and protect the personal information that you provide to us when you use the National Careers Services. These services include the National Careers Service Website, Lifelong Learning Account, National Contact Centre and Careers Advisory Services.

To take advantage of the services offered by the National Careers Service we will need to collect additional information from you for the purposes of registration and continued use of the services. By registering to use these services it will enable you to build a profile that you can develop and re-use across the Service. Registration for a Lifelong Learning Account involves signing up to the Terms and Conditions.

We may collect the following types of information from you:

  • Personal Information to enable us to register you to use the services including your name, telephone number, date of birth, postal and e-mail address.
  • Information relating to Careers, Skills, Action Plans and Achievement Records collected via the Lifelong Learning Account Tools and your interactions the Careers Advisory Services and National Contact Centre. This information will support us in delivering a service tailored to your needs. 
  • Information relating to your interactions with the service including any Careers Advice received or any contact you have with the National Contact Centre.
  • Information regarding your contact preferences in order for us to provide you with further correspondence about our products and services.


The primary use of the information that you provide to us is to enable us to provide you with an effective service as part of the overall National Careers Service.

The information we collect is used to:

  • support us in delivering the service to you.
  • enable us to contact you by means such as SMS, E-Mail etc.
  • enable us to carry out Customer Satisfaction Surveys.
  • allow an Adviser or the National Contact Centre to contact you when requested.
  • help us respond to your Technical or Service queries.
  • provide statistical information to approved Partner Organisations.

The data you provide to us will not be disclosed to Third Parties other than to the suppliers that we work with to deliver the Service.

Data you provide to us may be disclosed to departments internal to the Skills Funding Agency and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

We may also disclose your personal data where we have your permission or where we are under a duty to share your personal information in order to comply with any legal obligations.


You may request details of personal information we have collected from you under the relevant Data Protection Legislation. If you would like a copy of the information we have collected from you when using the Website please write to the Agency’s Information Rights Manager, Skills Funding Agency, Cheylesmore House, Quinton Road, Coventry, CV1 2WT.

If you think the information we hold about you is incomplete or incorrect or you wish to have your details removed, please contact the National Careers Service helpdesk or call 0800 100 900.

You can also correct the information you have provided online by signing into your Lifelong Learning account.


We operate an extensive security policy to ensure that all reasonable efforts are made to ensure the personal information collected by the Website is both secure and protected from disclosure.

Where we send data to third parties to help us provide the service to you, we will provide those third parties with only the information they need to deliver the service, and they are prohibited from using this information for any other purpose.
